Workforce Development Initiatives
Over the years, Mississauga’s Economic Development Office has played an increasingly important role in connecting our industries to academic institutions, all levels of governments, and other important stakeholders. During this time, many events and initiatives were developed to address workforce and talent needs including our Building Skill Talent Together and Life Sciences Focus on Talent events.
Mississauga is prepared to continue facilitating interactions between these various stakeholders in the hopes of improving future outcomes that support and grow our key industry sectors. Building on our success, we will continue to ensure our businesses have the talent they need to grow and succeed.
Building Skilled Talent Together
In February 2020, the City hosted the Building Skilled Talent Together (BSTT) Mississauga program. BSTT is an initiative that focuses on developing concrete actionable solutions to the skills gap challenges and the difficulty manufacturers had pre-pandemic in filling technical occupations. During COVID-19, while there have been extreme challenges for many of our manufacturers, there are still manufacturers that are seeking to hire specific skilled talent.
The program was kicked off with an event that attracted 100 people from advanced manufacturing companies, education and industry associations from across the province to discuss the talent needs in Mississauga.
Mississauga will continue to give local manufacturers the opportunity to speak directly with federal and provincial funding and service representatives who can provide funding options to de-risk the onboarding of new employees or upskilling existing employees.
Life Sciences Focus on Talent
In October 2019, the City hosted the Life Sciences Focus on Talent event that brought together life sciences companies, education and industry associations from across the province to:
• Better understand the role each stakeholder has in developing talent
• Influence the development of new programming that addresses the industry’s needs
• Develop new partnership, and facilitate networking and engagement
Building a sustainable workforce is critical to maintaining our region’s global competitiveness and its ability to support the commercialization of innovative products and services.
